Defying Definitions

There are probably as many definitions of homeschoolers as there are families educating at home, the semantics of which have little to do with issues of domicile (home) or education (schooling). According to Merriam-Webster, to homeschool is “to teach school subjects to one's children at home”. But what if the child is working on something that is not a ‘school subject’, but rather a course of study not taught in traditional schools?

Montessori and STEM

In the 2012 report U.S. Education Reform and National Security, the UN Council on Foreign Relations expressed concerns about loss: of potential, human capital, and personal safety due to education, having boldly asserted, “The lack of preparedness poses threats on five national security fronts: economic growth and competitiveness, physical safety, intellectual property, U.S. global awareness, and U.S. unity and cohesion”. And this dire statement does not even begin to include the individual economic ramifications education has on a student’s future employment and projected earnings; forecasted reports suggest a wide wage gap between so called “21st century” jobs and those that do not require technical training. The answer to this problem has been dubbed STEM and educators, global marketplace leaders, and economists are all taking note. So what is STEM and how does it relate to Montessori?

Socialization: The debate over discussion.

Debate continues amongst families in various homeschooling communities as to whether socialization is an issue worthy of discussion. A few in the blogosphere go so far as to suggest that any mention of the social needs of homeschoolers is problematic and only adds to perceived misconceptions about homeschooling as being isolated, with children lacking social skills.
